You can use a CD, DVD, or an external hard drive.  If your computer crashes, you can retrieve your data by whatever means that you use initially to save information whether it is external or a removable disc. It really does not matter as long as it is in place.   The price of these storage systems is fairly inexpensive, and can be purchase at office supplies stores, department stores, etc.   They work hand in hand with your virus, and firewall protection.  They help creates peace of mind that whatever damage hackers, etc try to destroy is retrievable.
